In the news: Rev. Yuki and his electrifying Dharma talks

Reverend Yuki Sugahara prepares to play his bass guitar at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento’s Bon Odori. (July 13, 2024).

Be sure to listen to some of Reverend Yuki’s recent musical selections, below.

From the Obon Festival to his Sunday Dharma talks, we can count on Reverend Yuki Sugahara to bring his considerable musical talent, much to the delight of the Sangha and the temple community.

In July, Rev. Yuki officially marked his first year as the new Rimban at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento. His tenure as our head minister recently made the Nichi Bei News, Rev. Yuki Sugahara strums along with Dharma messages.”

It’s well known that Rev. Yuki is an accomplished bass guitarist, having played in a Japanese rock band in his 20s.

What often surprises the Sangha are the songs that accompany his Dharma talks. From classical to jazz; from traditional Japanese to American pop, Rev. Yuki plays it all. And lately, he’s all about rock!

At the special monthly memorial service known as Shotsuki Hoyo, Rev. Yuki picked up his bass guitar and featured the song, “Marathon,” from the Canadian rock band Rush. The lyrics are really about life, overcoming obstacles, and taking even the smallest steps toward your dreams.

You can do a lot in a lifetime
If you don't burn out too fast
You can make the most of the distance
First you need endurance
First you've got to last

To commemorate the Japanese holiday, Kodomo no hi (Children’s Day), Rev. Yuki strapped on one of his other guitars for the song “Child’s Anthem” by the pop rock band, Toto.

For Memorial Day, Rev. Yuki talked about the importance of appreciating peace and the people who defend that peace. Playing his electric guitar, he jammed to “Top Gun,” from the Tom Cruise movie. (For some real jamming, check the video around 2:55.)

Rev Yuki also has his own YouTube channel (be sure to subscribe).
