New Happi Coat Design

You may have noticed more people with apparel celebrating the Buddhist Church of Sacramento’s 125th Anniversary, from ¼ zip pullovers and ball caps to our latest item, a happi coat with a contemporary design.

Sangha member and graphic designer Stephanie Fong created the new look. “I was excited to design the happi coats for the temple’s anniversary because of how culturally significant they are to our summer traditions, like Obon,” said Stephanie. “My bachan (grandmother) always wore her Buddhist Church of Sacramento happi coat to Obon, so it’s humbling to design something that can be worn by others for years to come.”

As for the design, Stephanie was inspired by traditional Japanese patterns. “With wonderful mentorship and guidance from Aileen Niizawa Morris (fellow Sangha member and graphic designer), we had the idea to extend the design beyond the back of the coat and up the sleeve,” she said. “I hope everyone will enjoy wearing this happi coat and dancing in July to commemorate the 125th anniversary.”

Early-release sales were brisk during our 125th merchandise pop-up event after Dharma Service on May 12 and May 19. A special one-week online sale is scheduled for June 1 - June 7, 2024 with convenient pick up at the June 9, Families & Friends picnic.

Stay tuned for more exclusive sales events coming your way, including in-person opportunities during bon odori practice and bon odori night. Keep an eye on the news section of our website for updates on future sales events.
