Deciphering the 125th Anniversary Logo
Graphic designer Kaela SooHoo, a Buddhist Church of Sacramento member, created the eye-catching logo for the 125th Anniversary celebration.
“We wanted a logo that celebrates how special this milestone is to the temple, something rich in history and culture,” explained Kaela. “Our goal was to be inviting and fun, and have it represented simply yet impactfullly.”
Her design features modern colors and lettering, along with some familiar icons.
Here’s what they symbolize:
The Dharma Wheel represents the teachings of the Buddha, teachings of compassion and interdependence.
Sakura means cherry blossom in Japanese. The first Japanese immigrants who settled in Sacramento called their new home “Sakura-mento.”
For many, folding an origami crane is an introduction to the Japanese culture. The crane symbolizes hope and peace.
Onenju are the prayer beads used when reciting Namo Amida Butsu, the Buddha’s name.
Together, the icons represent our 125th Anniversary theme: “Compassion. Culture. Community.”
