Little Something for the 125th Anniversary

Our celebration will include wood coins that pay tribute to the 125th Anniversary’s theme, “Compassion. Culture. Community.” Collect the entire series!

Have you picked up the first wood coin commemorating the Buddhist Church of Sacramento’s 125th Anniversary? There’s “125 YEARS” on one side and “Compassion” and purple prayer beads or an onenju stamped on the other.

This first coin captures only a fraction of our anniversary logo, which was created by Sangha member and graphic designer Kaela SooHoo.

The full logo includes the Dharma wheel, a cherry blossom or sakura, an origami crane, and two other C-words: Culture. and Community. The onenju is the first in a series of wood coins to be issued this year.

Some Sangha members have wondered, though, why a wooden token?

“The wood coin is a simple object commemorating our anniversary and the full year's celebration in 2024. Leave it in your vehicle cup holder, your catch-all container at work, or your home altar,” said Sandy Kataoka Fong, co-chair of the 125th Anniversary Steering Committee.

“It's a little something to remind us to be compassionate Buddhists and to celebrate the history of our temple,” added Sandy.

The coins are free and available to collect when members, organizations, and guests visit the temple for services and activities. Remember, the wood coin could be turned into a collector's series. As the saying goes "Collect 'em all!"
