Dharma School

The Buddhist Church of Sacramento Dharma School is an integral part of the mission of the Betsuin to share the teachings of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. An amazing team of volunteer teachers and student teaching assistants lead age-appropriate classes through engaging and innovative curriculum.

About Us

More Information

Welcome to Dharma School at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento (Betsuin)!  We welcome students from pre-Kindergarten through high school to attend Sunday morning services (usually the first and third Sundays of each month September through May), and then join us in classes immediately after the services.  Classes are grouped by age or grade with customized lesson plans developed by our dedicated volunteer Dharma School teachers.  The curriculum is based upon guidance from our temple ministers and the Buddhist Churches of America with an incremental emphasis on developing age-appropriate understanding of the Buddha Dharma and Jodo Shinshu practice.  Key elements include exploring the Eightfold Path and incorporating gratitude into our daily lives.

Dharma School services begin at 9:30 AM and classes begin shortly after service ends around 10:15 AM.  Classes generally last 45 minutes to an hour.  Depending upon enrollment, high school students may be encouraged to volunteer as teacher assistants on a case-by-case basis.  Dharma School students and families are encouraged to participate in a few temple activities and projects throughout the year.  These temple activities are vital to our Sangha (the temple membership and followers of the Dharma), always fun, and strengthen the sense of community.  Parents are encouraged to participate in classes and activities as well.  In addition, many of our families participate in the Junior Young Buddhists Association, Betsuin Sports Program, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts troops.
